Devonport is known as the gateway to Tasmania due to it's important port status.  It is where the Spirit of Tasmania ferries arrive with their vehicle and passenger cargoes.   Devonport is split into two by the Mersey River and was once two towns, Formby on the west bank and Torquay on the east bank .   The two towns merged in 1890.

Devonport sits on the banks of the Mersey River in the Mersey/Forth Valley. It is a fertile region known for it's vegetables, poppies and pyrethrum.  Just under 100 kms from Launceston, around an hour by car, Devonport is a busy town due to it's continual influx of visitors from the mainland and offers a very good range of accommodation and dining.

Devonport is also an important port for cargo ships and pleasure yachts, not relying entirely on the ferry services for trade.  Like most of Tasmania, Devonport offers a very good selection of heritage buildings both private and government.  There is plenty to explore and it is recommended you take in the history with a walk along the waterfront.
