One of Victoria's oldest river towns Echuca is still a very popular destination for those wanting a holiday on or by the water. Combined with Moama it is known as the Paddle Steamer capital of Australia. Echuca is Victoria with Moama over the border in New South Wales.
Echuca is derived from the Aboriginal word for "meeting of the water" and it certainly is an apt description. In the past Echuca was the main destination for paddle steamers carrying their cargoes of wool from near the Queensland border to start their lan journey to Melbourne.
Paddle steamers are still a regular feature on the river but are now dedicated to the tourist market. There's plenty to see and do in this area as well as being a great base for exploring other locations. You can explore the rivers edge and experience what it was like during it's glory days. Experience old time movies, boiled lollies or ride a paddle steamer.
You don't have to take a paddle steamer to enjoy the river. Normal hire boats are available to fish or just to explore and if you really want to luxuriate hire a houseboat for a few days. |
Echuca is a great destination at any time of year. A major tourist attraction on the Murray, Echuca is also a vibrant country town offering plenty of shopping and local delights. At this time of year the climate is cooler so take a coat as the evenings may be cold. What a great time to have a meal on a paddlesteamer, explore the heritage or sip coffee in a great Echuca or Moama cafe.
A great town for exploring or relaxing. I did both. Over to Moama for the clubs, perfect for a cheap meal and to play the pokies. Back to Echuca to shop in the town, take a walk by the river and enjoy the paddlesteamers passing by.
