There's no better place to be when it's hot than the Geelong Region.  Palm trees line Moorabool Street (the main street of Geelong's CBD) giving a warm, beachy feel to the inner city.  And why not.  Geelong has everything you want at any time of year with major shopping centres, stacks of beaches including Eastern Beach, a state of the art sports stadium and top theatres and shows.  If you don't visit Geelong during the cooler months you really should get out more.

Situated in the Eastern Park the Geelong Botanic Gardens (not Botanical Gardens) are just around the corner from the Eastern Beach.  Tthe Botanic Gardens Over 150 years old giving the opportunity to experience the foresight of Geelong's founders although in a smaller venue than originally planned.  In 2002 the Gardens were modernised with a new section in front of the original entrance to give it a 21st century style.

In the 1850's it was decided to set up over 80 hectares of botanical gardens but the task was far too big.  Realising their plans didn't fit in with the harsher climate they decided to limit the area to around 2 hectares and eventually growing to just under 4 hectares as it is now.

The Geelong Botanic Gardens are colorful lush gardens and hothouses that are well worth a couple of hours on your next visit.  Huge shade and palm trees adorn gardens filled with flowers and bushes from around the world.  Don't visit just for the plants though.  The statues and fountains throughout the gardens are a pleasure and the walking tracks are designed to break up the views so it's like walking through several gardens.

The new entrance to the gardens (built in 20020 has a desert, modernistic look standing apart from the original setting.  The Geelong Botanic Gardens have a picnic area with lush lawns and a small cafe - no cappuccinos unfortunately but the tea is very good.

The Geelong Botanic Gardens are open 7 days a week.
