Williamstown was originally Melbourne's first sea port, and for many years an important industrialised centre. This may have contributed to it not being known as a great beachside location. It is now a fashionable maritime village, with many historical buildings and classy cafes and restaurants. Williamstown is surrounded on three sides by water, with the northern and eastern coastline dotted with piers, gardens while Williamstown beach is located on the southern coastline and features a sweeping expanse of sand fronting calm swimming waters.
