Warrnambool is around 270 kms from Melbourne travelling along the Great Ocean Road . It has a population around 30, 000 and is the only city on the Shipwreck Coast .

Warrnambool is Victoria's southern right whale nursery with the visiting whales seen at Logan's Beach every May to October sometimes seen only 100 metres off the shore.
With a proud history of seafaring, Warrnambool puts it on show at the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. Complete with original buildings, lighthouse and a recreated port complete with ships, the museum gives an insight into the nineteenth century life of the city. Shipwreck relics are on display including the famous porcelain peacock washed up from the wreck of the Loch Ard in 1878.

I had an older friend when I was younger who had every vacation at Warrnambool.  He called it "Warrnambool by the Sea" and his descriptions of the place were quite magical.  It wasn't until many years later on my first visit to Warrnambool that I began to understand why.  To start with a huge playground for both children and adults (that I just did not want to leave) and an early Australian port that you can fully explore with real boats.  This place really is magical - lucky I never grew up either.

Warrnambool is part of the Great Ocean Road
World reknowned for its scenic drives aound the magnificent coastline of Victoria's south-west. The road runs 300 kilometres from the surfside town of Torquay, just south of Geelong through to Peterborough which is just east of Warrnambool. A winding road that takes you along cliff tops and breathtaking headlands, down to the edge of the beaches and across river estuaries and lush rainforests with beautiful scenery at every turn.
